Buddhist schools instructed to hold religious ceremonies

The Education Ministry has informed all Buddhist school heads of the country to organise religious programmes for students on July 16 for the Esala Poya day. To foster noble and positive values to students, suitable Buddhist programmes have to be organised at a school-level in collaboration with school development societies and past pupils. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, in a circular, has asked Zonal Education Directors to deploy about 4,500 Buddhist scholars and advisors on meditation belonging to both clergy and laity to make this event a success.

Confirming the above facts, Kurunegala District senior Education Director W.M. Balasooriya told at a meeting of school heads of Kurunegala, today, that about 350,000 students and 8,500 teachers have consented to sil-observing ceremonies and meditation programmes to be held at schools in Kurunegala.
