CEA directs Customs to return used mattresses imported from UK

The Central Environment Authority (CEA) yesterday directed Sri Lanka Customs to return the 98 containers with used mattresses to the United Kingdom. The Consumer Protection Unit of Sri Lanka Customs seized these containers imported from the UK recently.

The CEA officials inspected these containers at the Colombo Harbour and directed Customs officials to return these containers back to the UK. The CEA officials have told Customs officials that the used mattresses may have an adverse impact on the environment as they could be classified as ‘waste’.

A private company in the country had imported the mattresses from the UK, it was reported. Sources said that this company had allegedly imported 100 containers of used mattresses on an earlier occasion as well.
