Showers to persist: Meteorology Department

Atmospheric conditions are still favourable for showers or thundershowers in most parts of the island, particularly in the evening or night, the Meteorology Department said.

Showers or thundershowers could occur in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western and North-Western provinces and in the Mannar, Galle, and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers could occur in several places elsewhere after 2.00 pm.

Fairly heavy falls about 75 mm are likely to occur in some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa District.

There may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers. The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by lightning.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers could occur in several places in the sea area off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur in several places in the other sea areas around the island in the evening or night.

Winds would be South-westerly and their speeds could reach 25 to 35 kmph in the sea areas around the island.

Wind speed could increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea area off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and rough seas could be expected during thundershowers.
