Plot to murder businesswoman:

One suspect bailed, another remanded

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavitra Sanjeewani Pathirana released the male suspect in the murder plot case of an Unawatuna woman, on a Rs.2 million contract on two sureties of Rs.100,000 each and further remanded the other female suspect until July 24, when they were produced before her yesterday.

The suspects had been remanded on alleged charges of scheming to kill a businesswoman on a contract bonded by her husband, who is employed overseas.

The suspect who was further remanded is a public relations officer of a local government body named Disenthuwa Handi Dilani Manjula Kumari De Silva of Kuleegoda, Ambalangoda. The suspect who was bailed out is Sobana Handi Leelarathne, a retired soldier.

The Additional Magistrate further ordered the respective bank authorities not to release the amount of Rs.2 million deposited to a bank in Hikkaduwa by the alleged contractor of the murder plot. The said amount had been paid as an advance payment of the contract.

It was revealed in court that the female suspect, who went to the businesswoman, had disclosed the murder contract given by the latter’s husband and declared that she, the suspect, had no intention to kill her. However, the businesswoman had informed police about the matter.
