Steps to curb hate speech in facebook

Facebook is taking several meaningful steps in Sri Lanka and across the globe to check on hate speech and other similar online abuses, an official from facebook India said at Taj Samudra, Colombo yesterday.

This is been done through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in the first three months of 2019 facebook has removed 4 million pieces of hate speech out of which 64.4% was flagged by technology. In addition 6.4 million pieces of terrorist propaganda too was identified and removed and 99.3% of them were detected by AI.

“In addition we took action on 33.6 million pieces of violent content of which 98% was once aging identified by our technology,” the official from facebook who did not want to be named said.

It was also disclosed that over 2.2 billion fake accounts have been closed while 1.8 billion pieces of spam to was removed. “Our technology has also helped to remove 19.4 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity while violent content, bulling and harassment, child nudity posts and material too were removed.

Facebook officials have also met the Sri Lankan community on two occasions and Indian community officials on 17 occasions to seek their views on how to improve content of this global web portal, where 1.49 billion uses it daily.

The official said that facebook has also a new helpline where people with suicide tendencies could contact psychologist and seek assistance free of charge. “Several lives have been saved by this helpline and at vulnerable times its better to keep continuing giving access to facebook and social media rather than shutting them down as we believe that any speech is better than no speech,” the official said.
