Funds allocated for provincial healthcare services inadequate – governors

Provincial governors ask for more funds to carry out healthcare services and to develop provincial hospitals since they find the funds they receive now is highly inadequate in this regard.

They submitted a report on the shortcomings of the provincial hospitals to Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne at a recently held meeting at the ministry.

The Minister responded that he allocated the maximum funds and the treasury and the Finance Commission have to take steps to grant more funds.

The governors of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western and Southern Provinces requested the Health Minister to recruit healthcare staff systematically through the provincial councils and train them at the expense of the Ministry. The Minister accepted the proposal.

Minister Senarathne said around 600 rural hospitals will be upgraded under a five year plan. He said the country needs 2,300 more doctors and the number of students of medical faculties will be doubled to meet the need. More nurses and family healthcare officers will be recruited since the country needs many of them.
