Stern action against rumour, hate mongers - Minister

State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene has warned that stern action would be taken against those spreading false information with regard to national security and jeopardising social harmony.

Speaking to news media yesterday, the State Defence Minister said that information shared through internet social media recently on a possible terror attack in the South was wholly baseless. He said that he had asked the acting IGP and the Criminal Investigation Department to probe these incidents of circulation of false information.

Speaking to media after an event held at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo yesterday, Wijewardene said that the country’s security situation at present was good. “If there is any such information, people are asked to inform us. We will look into it. People should not panic as there is no such problem,” he said.

Referring to a recent statement by Ven. Medagoda Abhayatissa Thera where he said 20 persons had been killed so far under the Sharia Law in the country, Wijewardene said he has not received any fact to prove that statement but, the police have already begun investigations into it. The State Minister also claimed that a candidate from the United National Party party will definitely win the next presidential election.

He added that the names of UNP leader, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya are on the list of possible candidates and would be discussed in the future.“Our candidate is not yet decided and it is up to the party’s working committee,” he said.
