Enlightening a woman is like enlightening a family, said Daya Rohana Atukorala, Emeritus Professor of Education at the Colombo University, at the Golden jubilee celebration of the Tharunee newspaper yesterday.

He said the Tharunee newspaper plays a significant role in empowering Sri Lankan women, which would lead to a powerful nation.

“The Tharunee newspaper, which is a Lake House publication, is popular among women of all ages today. Tharunee is rendering a great service by bringing veteran artistes to the doorstep to provide free lectures and demonstrations to educate women on self-employment, he added.

He also said that it is not only absorbed by women, but by other readers as well. “There is a competition among newspapers, yet one should not compete with primitive methods. Tharunee is a leading women newspaper keeping its standards while catering to the needs of the readers,” he said.

Associated Newspapers Ceylon Limited General Manager K.G.A.B Amaradasa also spoke at the event.

Former Editor of Tharunee, Anula De Silva reminisced the 50-years-long journey of the newspaper.
