China, SL hold workshop on monsoon climate

On the invitation oftheChina–Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research, the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, Priyangika Dharmasena attended the inauguration ceremony of the Fifth China–Sri Lanka Joint Workshop on Monsoon Climate and Marine Environment Change, held for the first time in China, on July 6.

The previous joint workshops were held in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan scholars and officials attached to the universities of Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa, Peradeniya, the Open University, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry, Meteorological Development, and Chinese scholars participated in the workshop which consisted of presentations and question and answer sessions. The developments in the areas of climate change and marine environment were discussed and reviewed during the presentations.

The Consul General in her address said the two seasonal monsoons in Sri Lanka on which the country depends for her annual rainfall and agricultural needs. She further said a changing environment could influence the management of resources and infrastructure in Sri Lanka.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Secretary W.P. Sandanayake and China–Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research Director Prof. Dongxiao Wang also spoke at the workshop.
