The challenge before us is to use the education system to produce disciplined students with a sense of humanism who will be an asset to the country, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

Buddhism can play a vital role in this direction, he said. He was speaking at the ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a proposed multipurpose technological building at Horana Vidyaratna University College to coincide with its centenary celebrations, through funding provided by the ‘Nearest School is the Best School’ project.

Minister Kariyawasam said Vidyaratna College had a simple beginning in a classroom building with a thatched roof. Participants at the meeting would have experienced the evolution of the education system from the age of the slate and blackboard to the age of the computer tab.

The world today was changing fast, and we, as Sri Lankans, should keep pace with global technological changes, but also safeguard our own customs and values. This was a country where people of all communities had lived in unity throughout the ages. Unless we continued that unity and lived intelligently, we might set a bad example for future generations, the Education Minister said.

“In two months we will provide 100,000 tablet computers free to all students in Advanced Level classes and teaching staff in national schools,” he said.

New innovations are bound to earn criticism and flak from certain quarters. But the fact remains that schoolchildren should be prepared to keep pace with modern global developments if they are to achieve progress, the Minister said.

Vidyaratne University College Parivenadhipati Ven. Prof Labugama Narada Thera said this was the first time that his institution hadreceived a modern multipurpose technological building and he was grateful to Education Minister Kariyawasam for sponsoring the project. UNP Horana organiser Hemantha Wickremaarachchi was present on the occasion.
