Judgement on August 8 for Gamini Senarath, two others

The Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar fixed for judgement the case filed against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath and two others. This is over the alleged illegal transfer of Rs.500 million from Litro Gas to Canwill Holdings.

The Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne hearing this case announced that the judgement will be delivered on August 8.

When the case came up before the Trial-at-Bar bench, both prosecution and defence filed their written submissions pertaining to the case.

On a previous occasion, the Court ordered acquittal and release of the third accused, former Samurdhi Commissioner Neil Bandara Hapuwinna, from the case owing to lack of evidence against him.

However, the Permanent High Court-at-Bar is proceeding with the prosecution of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath, former Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Managing Director Piyadasa Kudabalage and, Lasantha Bandara.

The accused are charged under the Penal Code, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Public Property Act.

The Attorney General alleges that the accused have committed this offence between February 1, 2014 and January 20, 2015.

Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige appeared for the Attorney General. President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana, Anil Silva PC, Ali Sabry PC and Navin Marapana PC appeared for the defence.
