Presidential Election

‘SLPP will go it alone’

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will contest the forthcoming Presidential Election on its own and anyone in the SLFP is free to join its ranks, Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Roshan Ranasinghe said.

He said the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna will not join hands with the SLFP for the Presidential Election.

Parliamentarian Ranasinghe was speaking while presiding over the inaugural meeting of the Pujapitiya SLPP Youth Front (Bala Mandalaya), held at Earl’s Red Hotel recently.

Ranasinghe said President Maithripala Sirisena who assumed office after pledging to retire after completing his five-year term should leave office as promised.

SLFP members should ensure that he keeps his promise.

He said people were waiting impatiently to elect a new President to office as it was their political right.

The country should never leave room for extremism to raise its head in the future. People should learn to lead their lives according to the principles of Buddhism, Ranasinghe said.

Kandy District Parliamentarian Lohan Ratwatte said the SLPP would hold its national convention on August 11 and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa would officially take over the party leadership on that day.

The SLPP would field its own candidate for the next Presidential Election and this candidate would be announced by Mahinda Rajapaksa on August 11.

Parliamentarians Keheliya Rambukwella, Dilum Amunugama and Ananda Aluthgamage, former Central Provincial Council member Gunatilleke Rajapaksa and Pujapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha member Anura Fernando also spoke.
