Hundred plots of land in Galle without owners

A recent survey has revealed that around 100 plots of land in the Galle Fort has no owners, Galle Heritage Foundation Director D.K.S. Jayalakshmi said.

The Survey Department had conducted the programme in order to prepare the corresponding cadastral maps, she added.

About 25 state lands have been identified and the department intends to obtain accurate details on disputed lands from the Divisional Secretariat, to ensure strong and clear ownership, the director said.

Galle’s population stood at 3,000 in the past; however, at present, only 1,507 people from 278 families reside in the area, which spans 48 acres.

The majority of them have sold their properties and shifted to the suburbs, Jayalakshmi added.
