Two van hijackers remanded

Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela remanded two suspects in a vehicle hijacking case until July 19 after they were identified by the witness at an identification parade held at the Magistrate’s Court.

The remanded persons are of the ages 18 and 19. The suspects had summoned the driver of a hiring van to the Galle Cemetery saying they wanted to go on a trip. They had then stabbed the driver and stolen the vehicle. The victim was later admitted to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The suspects had initially arrived at the cab service centre at the Samanala Playground in Galle and discussed with the victim about the trip. Investigations also revealed that the suspects had bought fuel form a petrol shed and fled the scene without paying for it.

However, police had intercepted the suspects at Yakkalamulla. The suspects had confessed to the police that they stole the van in order to sell it and buy two motorcycles with the money.
