Seventeen suspects further remanded

Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela further remanded the 17 suspects in the Rathgama murder case until July 22 when they were produced before him yesterday.

IP Kapila NIshantha De Silva, SI H.G. Viraja Madusanka, Constable H.G. Chanaka, Beat Officer K. Marshal Thusara Nalinda, former SP Special Crime Investigation Unit OIC IP E.A. Saman Rohana, SI Vidanage Thilakarathna, Constable Upul Ranjith IP Wimalarathna, SI Wimalasiri, Sergeants Premalal and Chaminda, Constable Sanat and Vidanagama, Police driver Jayarathna, Walasmulla Forest Ranger S.J.B. Suvaris, as well as Constables Anil Kumara and Ragamunige Wijitha Kumara, are the suspects who were further remanded.

They were prosecuted on the criminal charges of the abduction of the two businessmen, Gonapinuwalage Asela Manjula Kumara and Kosma Rassik Chinthaka of Rathna Udagama, Rathgama in Galle, on January 23, conspiring to murder and burn them, as well as aiding to carry out the crime.

The Criminal Investigation Department, submitting a further report, told court that they had recorded statements of the then Galle Division DIG Chandana Alahakoon, the first OIC of Criminal Investigation Unit Kamal Kiriella; as well as Traffic Branch OIC ASP Asitha de Silva; regarding the crime. They pleaded the magistrate to further remand the suspects as the respective investigations were not yet complete.

In response, the defence lawyers told court that a number of suspects in the case had already submitted their bail applications to the High Court and requested that the charges against the suspects be submitted separately in respect of each suspect.

The Criminal Investigation Department subsequently assured that the charges would be submitted distinctly against each suspect.

IP Ranjith Munasinghe and Constable Amila of the Criminal Investigation Department prosecuted while a group of counselors including A.G.P. Sarathchandra, Pradeep Madanayake, and Ravi Domingo appeared on behalf of the defendants.
