ARMY INTELLIGENCE OFFICER ARRESTED

An Army Intelligence Officer was arrested by a Special CID team on July 8 in connection with the attack on Rivira founder Editor Senior Journalist Upali Tennakoon.

Scientific investigation conducted by the CID had proved that this Commissioned Officer named Rajapaksalage Lalith Rajapaksa was directly involved in the attack on Upali Tennakoon at Imbulgoda, Gampaha on January 23 morning in 2009 while he was travelling in his car with his wife.

Earlier, the CID had arrested seven intelligence officers on suspicion in this connection based on research evidence and analysis of telephone conversations.

Upali Tennakoon who fled the country and was given asylum in the US following this attack returned to the country with his wife Mrs. Dhammika Tennakoon in 2016 and identified the suspects involved in the attack at an identification parade held at the Gampaha Courts.

Tennakoon had identified some of the suspects involved during this parade.

The CID officer said the Intelligence Officer arrested on July 8 is the 8th suspect in the case and he will be presented at an identification parade shortly after taking steps to get down Upali Tennakoon and his wife from the US to identify him.

Ex Army Intelligence officer arrested over assault on Upali Tennakoon (14:20)

The Criminal Investigation Department has arrested the former Corporal of the Army Intelligence Unit Lalith Rajapaksa over the assault of former newspaper editor, Upali Tennakoon.

The arrests were made after the CID confirmed that the fingerprints of the officer matches the fingerprints found in the van used on the day of the assault.

The suspect will be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate's Court today.
