Over 450,000 affected by drought

Nearly 454,000 individuals belonging to 124,100 families in various parts of the country have been affected by drought so far this year, the Disaster Management Centre said.

According to the situation report issued yesterday, the highest number of victims (77,633) is reported in the Batticoloa district. The worst drought-hit districts are Puttalam, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Ampara, and Mannar.

According to the Meteorology Department, many small tanks and reservoirs have dried up despite the reasonable rains during the monsoon.

The Disaster Management Ministry has taken steps to supply water for the affected people and grant compensation.
