Southern Highway construction work halted

The construction work of the Southern Highway from Matara to Beliatta has come to a standstill as the Chinese firm that undertook the construction work has not been paid agreed fund for the past 10 months.

The sources of the Chinese firm said it owes USD 80 m from the Sri Lanka authorities. The construction work came to a halt from July 2. The construction work of over 30 km was stopped due to the non-payment.

The construction work of the Southern Highway commenced in 2015 and it should be completed and vested with the people by November this year.

The sources said that 90 per cent of the construction work was completed. The authorities will incur Rs.100 million loss due to the stoppage of construction work, the sources said.
