First India-assisted model village opened

The first model village built with Indian assistance under the model village programme of the Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs Ministry, Ranidugama in the Gampaha District was inaugurated and the houses were handed over to the beneficiaries at a special event held on Saturday.

Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Acting Indian High Commissioner Dr. Shilpak Ambule jointly inaugurated the village and handed over the houses. Parliamentarians, Western Provincial leaders, senior government officials and a large number of people from the region attended the ceremony.

The Indian government has partnered with the Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs Ministry to build 100 model villages consisting of 2,400 houses across Sri Lanka under Indian grant assistance of Sri Lankan Rs. 1,200 million. These 2,400 houses are being built in addition to the 60,000 houses built under the Indian Housing Project meant for war-affected people in the North and East and the estate workers in the plantation areas.

India has undertaken more than 70 people-oriented development projects in various fields including health, education, housing, skill development, infrastructure and vocational training across the country including the largest University Auditorium in the Ruhuna University in Matara.

About, 20 such projects are currently under progress. The overall development portfolio of the Indian government in Sri Lanka is close to US$ 3 billion out of which US$ 560 million are in grants.
