NDB, British Council awards ‘English for Teaching’ candidates

NDB together with British Council recently awarded over 190 successful candidates from Government Schools of ten regions, who completed the “English for Teaching” training programme at an award ceremony held at the DHPL/NDB auditorium at Nawam Mawatha.

The teachers were from Government Schools from regions in Ampara, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Eheliyagoda, Gampaha, Hatton, Matara, Vavuniya and Yakarawatta.

The ceremony was graced by senior officials of the Bank and the British Council The activity based training was delivered through 10 Regional English Support Centres (RESCs) in nine Provinces, addressing two key aspects of teacher training – Language Improvement and Teaching Ability.

The 120 hour training course included new and innovative training methods to equip teachers to teach as well as manage their students in a more holistic manner.

Gill Caldicott, Country Director, British Council, said, “The British Council is celebrating 70 years in Sri Lanka and we are very proud to be collaborating with NDB on this teacher training programme. Teachers are in a very important position. They are able to influence the future generations of this country and I am convinced that this programme will help to improve the employability of young people, the prosperity and peace of Sri Lanka.”

Director and Group CEO of NDB bank, Dimantha Senviratne added “In the past six years, over a thousand teachers have been trained, and they have reached about half a million students, who will have benefitted from this training. Through such programmes NDB also makes every effort to help build financial autonomy across the nation.”

Magudapoopathy Dushyanthi of Cp/Hz/Ingestre Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Dickoya, Nuwara Eliya said “We learnt interesting ways to teach grammar and vocabulary through games and songs. We have gained a wide knowledge which is helpful in classroom teaching.”
