Two new Acts to expedite hearing of court cases - Thalatha

Two new Acts that would prevent delays in the hearing of court cases will be presented to Parliament, Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorale said yesterday.

“The two Acts pertaining to the granting of bail by a High Court, will be presented to Parliament soon,” Minister Athukorale pointed out.

Minister Athukorale made these observations while participating in the opening ceremony of Matale High Court of Justice held under the patronage of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.

Speaking at the event, Minister Athukorale observed that the government was able to ensure the independence of the judiciary unlike during the previous regimes.

“The two new Acts will expedite the hearing process that will save both time and money of the public,” she also said.

The Minister pointed out that there are about 750,000 cases which are delayed due to multiple reasons.

State Ministers Wasantha Aluwihare and Ranjith Aluwihare along with Parliamentarian Rohini Wijeratne participated.
