Registration of Persons Dept. systems glitch overcome:

Same-day service by Monday, GCE exam IDs on time

Services at the Department of Registration of Persons which were hampered by a sudden system failure will be normal by Monday, Operations and Information Technology Commissioner Harsha Ilukpitiya told news media yesterday.

The usual one-day service will re-commence by Monday, once the computer system comes to normal, Commissioner Ilukpitiya said. He added that the system failure was reported on Thursday and steps are now being taken to rectify the matter by Monday.

When asked whether this system failure was the outcome of a cyber-attack, Ilukpitiya said that the system failure could not be a cyber-attack since the Department computer system has not been linked to any network as it was a local area network.

“Therefore, this issue is not a cyber-attack but a temporary system-failure,” he said. He said that one-day service applications received yesterday are being treated as normal service applications.

The identity cards relating to those applications will be sent to the intended recipient by speed post after processing those applications promptly within a few days.

According to him, the Department receives around 1,000 applications daily a majority of which are for one-day service. Ilukpitiya said the Department maintained data back-up storage. .

“The system is being recovered with the back-up system now and this process will take three working days. By Monday it will be OK,” he said.

The processing of identity cards for the GCE Advanced Level and Ordinary Level examination candidates has not been affected by the system failure, he said.

“We have planned to complete the identity cards issuing process for Ordinary Level candidates by August 31. Processing of Advanced Level candidates has been completed by March 31st and accordingly 215,000 identity cards have already been issued” he said.
