Post-mortem confirms gun injury in school parent’s shooting

Soldier ordered to be kept under Army custody:

The father of three school students who died in the Akmeemana sentry firing had been wounded in the abdomen by gunshot, the Post-Mortem findings revealed.

The post-mortem was held yesterday into the death of the father of three who died after being shot on Tuesday by a soldier on duty at the Manawila Upananda National School in Akmeemana, Galle. The findings were that the bullet had penetrated through the body causing severe damage to blood vessels resulting in excessive bleeding, leading to death.

Kaluthotage Udaya Predeep Kumara,(39) of Wanchawala, Pilana, a retired Navy officer was reportedly shot dead by the soldier on duty when he attempted to enter into the premises amid objections by the soldier on duty.

Police investigations reveal that the dead person had rushed to the school on information that one of his children had fallen sick and attempted to pick up the child from school. However, the solider who was on duty at the entrance to the junior section of the school had prevented him. Thereafter, the parent had forcibly entered the school premises ignoring the soldier’s instructions. This had allegedly led to the shooting.

Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Janaki Warushahennadi conducted the postmortem at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital on Tuesday.
