The Batticaloa Police have arrested four suspects on Thursday night in connection with the theft of a revolver when two officers were assaulted by a group of persons while they were on traffic duty in the Pudur area in the Batticaloa Police Division.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the four suspects had been identified as 23-year-old Vasubala Nirmalaraj alias Nimmi, of Thibilathivu, Batticaloa, 55-year-old Ramiah Lecchchumanan, of Sethukuda, 19-year-old Sivashangar Dushanthan, of Thibilathivu, Batticaloa and 19-year-old Sivanandarajah Purusothaman, of Pudur, Batticaloa.

The Policemen had reportedly stopped a motorcyclist around 11.00 am on Thursday where the rider did not have a valid license.

Thereafter, the two Ppolicemen were taking the motorcycle back to the police station when two men on another motorcycle had blocked their path and at that time the motorcycle had toppled.

This had caused the officers to fall off the motorbike while several villagers had arrived at the scene and had assaulted the two police officers.

Meanwhile, during the scuffle the revolver belonging to one of the police officers had been stolen.

The two injured police officers have been admitted to the Batticaloa Hospital.

The Batticaloa Police is conducting further investigations to recover the stolen revolver and to arrest the other suspects.
