The brutal ragging should be wiped out from universities, City Planning Water Supplies and Higher Education Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunna said.

He was addressing a workshop organised to have a dialogue in streamlining the university system recently in Colombo.

Eradication of ragging, implementing degree programmes, allocating a year for institutional industry, and practical training without traditional theoretical courses are some of the areas that were discussed at the workshop.

Introducing computer app for degree programmes in conformity with the subject requirements, yielding maximum benefits out of the agreements reached with foreign universities and countries are also discussed.

The secretary stressed the right to education whilst safeguarding the State University System and its children.

“The brutal ragging is continued by a hostile group without empathy. It should be wiped out from the university system,” he said.

He said senior students should understand that society does not approve ragging anymore. University students must honor the right of the new students and refrain from harming them.

“We lost precious lives in ragging. Some students committed suicide since they could not bear the pressure of ragging. Many undergo treatments throughout their lifetime. Many received psychological treatments since they have become mentally imbalanced in the ragging they faced,” he said. Many students qualify to enter universities but they do not come. Some students leave university in fear of ragging, he said.

Vice Chancellors and Deans should take action to eradicate ragging, and the University Council should take immediate steps to take disciplinary and legal actions against raggers, he said.
