Police arrests 9,410 drug offenders

The Police had arrested 9,410 suspects for having narcotics and committing drug offences during the first three weeks of the month-long narcotics prevention programme commenced on June 29, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He was addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday.

The Police Media Spokesperson said that from June 9 to July 2, the police had seized 8 kg and 420 g of heroin, 1 kg and 107 g of cocaine, 266 g of methamphetamine (Ice), 56 g of hashish and 403 g of opium.

Moreover, 904 kg and 181 g of cannabis were seized and 34,249 cannabis plants were destroyed. The Police had also seized 10kg and 681 g of cannabis-based products.

The Police Spokesman said 7,598 persons were arrested with other illegal substances. From June 9 to July 2, 91,587 litres of illegal brew, 332,087 litres of goda, 1547 litres of toddy, 10,614 litres of arrack and 11,631 cigarettes were seized, he said. The raids were carried out under the Narcotics Prevention Programme.

SP Gunasekara said warrants were issued against 1,951 suspects. They were arrested and charged, he said. Around 342,242 schoolchildren and 161,876 others were made aware of the dangers in using drugs during the month-long programme, he said.

About 2,012 drug addicts were sent for rehabilitation, he said.
