Soldier ordered to be kept under Army custody until AG’s advice

The army soldier involved in the incident where the father of a student had died when he was shot while trying to enter a school in Akmeemana on Thursday was produced before the Galle Additional Magistrate yesterday.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the magistrate had ordered the soldier to be held in the custody of the Boossa 581 Brigade authorities for a month until the AG’s advice is received on how to proceed with the case.

Southern Province and Sabaragamuwa Province Senior DIG Roshan Fernando said the soldier was deployed for duty at the school under emergency regulations and the advice of the Attorney General has been sought on whether he should be tried under emergency regulations.

It is said that the school had notified the father that one of the children was ill and this incident had occurred when he had gone to the school. The three children are studying in grade 1, 2 and 10, he said. The victim aged 39 is a retired member of the Navy Band and is a resident of the Pilana area.

A police team under an ASP has been appointed to investigate the incident.
