A tense situation erupted between residents of Gampola and police during a fast by a Buddhist monk in Gampola.

Deputy Parivenadhipathi of Thebiligala Bauddhaloka Pririvena Ven. Kalugala Kassapa Thera began the fast demanding the government to repair the Gampola–Udagama Road via Mariyawatte as officials continuously failed to take steps to repair the road.

The residents of the area launched the protest for the second day urging the authorities to repair the road and doctors of the Gampola Base Hospital examined the condition of the monk on fast.

The tense situation erupted when police arrived at the place to disperse the protestors who obstructed the main road causing heavy traffic congestion.

Police dispersed the protest later on. The protestors brought the Thera to the hospital citing that Gampola police assaulted him.
