New beginning for UNP with Sajith - MP Appuhamy

Puttalam district Parliamentarian Hector Appuhamy on Wednesday said Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera indicated recently that Minister Sajith Premadasa could be the next Presidential candidate of the UNP and this could be the beginning of a new political programme for the UNP.

He said that whoever is willing to be UNP Presidential candidate should be able to win the hearts of the people as well as the blessings of the Party Leader and UNP members.

Appuhamy also urged law enforcement authorities to probe and arrest all those who helped to strengthen terrorist mastermind Zahran with money and by other means, just as they investigated Zahran’s terrorism network.

Appuhamy said the Police have arrested some people bribed by Zahran, but the Police have not arrested those who funded him.

He added that Minister Rajitha Senaratne has also mentioned that Zahran and 26 others were paid money by certain people. “These people have protected Zahran. So, why can’t the relevant law and order sections of the government investigate these incidents and arrest the responsible people?” he queried.

“To prevent repetitions of these kinds of barbaric acts, all those who contributed to the Easter Sunday attacks should be punished, irrespective of their ranks. The questioning of Pujitha Jayasundara and Hemasiri Fernando will reveal exactly who is responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks. We want an independent and transparent investigation on behalf of the innocent people who lost their lives in the attacks,” Appuhamy said.

“The progress of the investigations should be conveyed officially by law enforcement authorities. Then there will be no suspicion and doubt in the minds of the people. We do not want sensitive information with regard to national security revealed. But there should be disclosure on the present and future actions regarding the terror attacks. The leaders of the government, religious leaders, and civil society members should sit together and discuss the future course of action in this regard. Unnecessary problems can arise in the absence of disclosure by the relevant authorities.”

“We were making good progress in terms of development when President Maithripala Sirisena was misled by certain SLFP elements connected to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. They elected the President to the post of Chairman of the SLFP and appointed defeated SLFP candidates as Ministers. It was they who created a clash between the President and Prime Minister, preventing President Sirisena from becoming the President in 2020,” Appuhamy said.

“The President fell for their devious tactics. The entire country was plunged into chaos due to his decisions. These people are engaged in obstructing the development drive of the government. Therefore, we have to move forward facing many challenges posed by these people.”

“However, despite all these challenges and the negative impacts of the Easter Sunday attacks, we stabilised the economy and made it possible for Sri Lanka to repay loan installments,” the UNP Parliamentarian said.

“Sri Lanka has also been selected as the number one country in the world for travellers to visit in the coming year, by a leading global travel authority, Lonely Planet, in its ‘Best in Travel 2019’,” he said.

Meanwhile, during this year, up to June 21, the Sri Lankan rupee appreciated against the US dollar by over 3.4 percent. However, despite the challenges, the government is working fast to achieve speedy development in the coming months, Appuhamy said.

He further said the Opposition is trying to mislead people by creating false fear regarding the USA for narrow political mileage. The SOFA agreement was signed with USA by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and not by us.

The Acquisition and Cross Services Agreement (ACSA) was also signed in 2007 during the period Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was the Defence Secretary. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was a USA citizen at that time, but no one uttered a word about that.
