Murder suspects acquitted and freed

Galle High Court Judge W.P.S Nissanka acquitted and released all seven suspects of a murder that occurred in the Poddala police area on grounds of the prosecutor’s failure to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubts.

The acquitted suspects are Abeywickrama Jayathilake Buddhika alias Tukka, Charitha Parasad Abeywickrama Jayathilake, Kaggoda Arachchige Dasun Tharanga alais Menike,Waihena Gamage Prasanna Sanjeewa Ranga, Mahawattage Don Pramod Chaturanga, Thalahitiya Withanage Supun Chaminda and Weliwitiya Kankanamge Gayan Chandana alias Dodan. They had been indicted on the charges of being members of an unlawful assembly, causing fatal injuries and murder of Keembiya Liyange Prasanna on June 6, 2016 in the Poddala police area.

They were further prosecuted that on the day of the crime the suspects who arrived in a three wheeler had hacked the slain suspect while the latter was travelling on a motorcycle.

Attorneys Epa Arunashantha and Nanadasiri Galoluwa looked after the interests of the respondents. Sergeant Gnanasiri (21398) of Poddala Police assisted the State Counsel in the prosecution.
