Awards for cops for drunk driving busts

With the aim of minimising road accidents, the Police Headquarters has decided to implement a month long operation countrywide from July 5 to August 5 to nab drunk drivers, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said yesterday. The incidence of driving under the influence of alcohol has more than doubled this year compared with 2018.

“The speciality of this special operation is that police officers who successfully book drunk drivers would be awarded special cash rewards with funds from the Police Reward Fund. The Police Headquarters has decided to give cash rewards once the drunk drivers are produced in court and charged for the offence. Accordingly, if a police officer apprehends a drunk driver of a passenger transport vehicle, he would be entitled to a cash reward of Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 2,500 for a driver of any other vehicle,” he added.

The Police Spokesman also noted that in the event anyone tries to intervene to obtain release of an arrested drunk driver or tries to influence the police for some lenience, officers have been instructed to note down the identity details and telephone number of the person intervening and the name of the arrested suspect. Officers are to then submit a report to the Traffic DIG with regard to such persons who try to influence the police in any way on behalf of such arrested drunk drivers.

SP Gunasekara also noted that such drunk drivers could face fines of up to Rs. 25,000 if found guilty by a court of law. “The courts could also suspend his/her licence for a specific period if convicted. Last year 105,094 drunk drivers had been arrested by the police and within the first five months of this year 360,359 drunk drivers have been arrested.”

Within the first six months of 2019 the number of fatal accidents recorded is 1,281 and the number of fatal accidents during the same period in 2018 stood at 1,552.
