Janek de Silva brings out poems with ‘Private Promises’

Janek de Silva launched his book of poems 'Private Promises' at the Kadirgamar Centre, Colombo yesterday.

Prof. Arjuna Parakrama delivering the keynote address at the launch said this was a very wonderful little book of poems, because it was a very moving reflection of a young man.

He has in my view, found the “perfect perch” in poetic expression. “Private Promises” the maiden book of poet Janek de Silva has 37 poems.

Prof. Arjuna Parakrama in his introduction to this book of poems, said that although the composer of the book of poems yet youthful in years, was radical, sophisticated and very powerful, belying his age, as could be seen in those poems he had composed to express his private promises.

‘The more private you hold your promise, the more powerful they become’, quoting those few lines from the book of poems, Prof.Parakrama said those were very beautiful ideas, beautifully expressed. The stark insight was mature and devastatingly simple, he added.

Janek de Silva, addressing the audience said, the launching of the book would not have happened if not for the encouragement, love and tireless editing of Mahum Kidwai, and the guidance and teaching he got to improve his writing from Prof.Parakrama was very remarkable, he said.

At the launch ceremony, several colleagues including the youngest brother of Janek read out poems from the book, which were very touching to them as individuals. Janek's family members donned the occasion in a very fitting manner and his classmates and close associates joined to fill the room with warmness and friendship.
