Thushan Gomes of Expo Lanka and Nimesha Perera of Union Bank emerged men’s and women’s open singles champion at the 36th Mercantile Novices Badminton Championships held recently at the Mercnatile Badminton Indoor Stadium Colombo 07.

Thushan Gomes made a two straight sets win 21/15, 21/18 over Pubudu Mallikarachchi of Citizens Development Bank to win the title while Nimesha Perera had to make three setter game at the women’s single final. Nimesha lost her first set 15/21 but fought back strongly to win the second and third sets 21/7, 21/18.

Meanwhile Indika Weerasinghe of Sangrilla Hotels won the men’s over 35 title defeating A.A.S.S. Prasad of Dailog after hard fought three setter game. Indika who was beaten first set 17/21 finally won the second and third sets 21/18, 22/20.

Sanjeewa Akuretiya Managing Director of the Flex Sports Wear Pvt Lts was the chief guest and gave away the awards. Mercantile Badminton President Roshan Fernando who was elected the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton recently also present.
