Bail for Technical Officer on hacking charges

The Technical Officer of the Presidential Secretariat, who was arrested for hacking into the database of the Presidential Fund and changing its password, was yesterday released on bail by Colombo Additional Magistrate Thanuja Jayatunga.

The suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs.10,000 and two sureties of Rs.200,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a bail condition on the suspect not to hack into any data base.

The Magistrate also ordered the suspect to report before the Criminal Investigations Department on the last Sunday of every month between 9 a.m and 12.p.m.

The arrested suspect who was a resident of Welagana, Divulapitiya had served as a technical officer at the Presidential Secretariat.

The Criminal Investigations Department informed court that the suspect had hacked into the database of the Presidential Secretariat through his personal computer before changing its password. The CID also stated that the suspect had intentionally entered to the data base on several occasions.
