Anuradhapura has received a large number of housing development projects and the number is second only to that of Hambantota, said Housing Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating two model villages in Anuradhapura - Warunagama and Arunalugama - in Talawa and Thambutthegama on weekend.

The Minister said 27 model villages were completed now in the district under the ‘Semata Sevana by 2020’ housing programme. Next to Hambantota, Anuradhapura received many model villages (2,500) in 2019. The Minister thanked Anuradhapura NHDA staff for their dedication and commitments to complete housing projects on time.

He said 135 model villages are constructed in 2019 and 108 more will be commissioned before November.

“Food, water, and shelter along with proper sanitary facilities are vital for living,” Minister Premadasa said.

“Our government will provide shelter for the homeless in 25 districts under the ‘Semata Sevana Housing Programme before long. A housing unit along with a 15-perch of land costs the government about 2.5 million,” the Minister said.

He said recipients’ politics, creed, race, cast or religion will not be taken into account for providing them with housing units.
