No Chinese cigarettes for Sri Lanka

The Cabinet has decided not to import cigarettes from China, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne had stated that there was a long discussion on the issue during the Cabinet meeting and after the discussion, a decision was made not to import Chinese cigarettes, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile speaking at a press conference at the GMOA headquarters in Colombo yesterday evening, the Government Medical Officers’ Association Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said the President and all relevant authorities should take steps to formulate a concrete system to control tobacco use, beyond stopping the importation of Chinese cigarettes.

The WHO awarded Sri Lanka thrice in recognition of its efforts to control tobacco use. Sri Lanka has implemented 20 recommendations of 22 recommendations in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
