Eight young children badly hurt

Nawalapitiya Police said eight children and a driver sustained serious injuries when the three-wheeler in which they were travelling met with an accident yesterday morning.

The injured were admitted to Nawalapitiya Base Hospital.

Police said the three-wheeler driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid off the road and fall into a ditch, as it entered the Nawalapitiya - Hapugasthalawa main road from a by-lane near Hapugasthalawa Muslim College.

Among the injured were five schoolboys and three schoolgirls aged between seven and eight. One schoolboy had been transferred to Kandy Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The three-wheeler was severely damaged in the accident. Police said reckless driving, speeding and too many passengers had caused the accident.
