FCID probes Rs. 55 mn credited to woman suspect

The Financial Crimes Investigations Department (FCID) yesterday informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that they have commenced an investigation into a sum of Rs. 55 million credited to the bank account of Kider Mohammed Shabadeen Aisha, who was a director of three private construction companies.

The FCID informed the court that the investigation was launched under the instructions of the Acting IGP based on a complaint lodged by the Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank.

The FCID said that the probe was launched under Section 15(1) of the Financial Transaction Reporting Act No. 6 of 2006 relating to a suspicious financial transaction, and the Money Laundering Act No. 05 of 2006.

The FCID informed court that Rs. 55 million had been deposited in a private bank account of Kider Mohammed Shabadeen Aisha through cheques issued by a private financial institution.

The credited amount had been withdrawn on several occasions in a suspicious manner, the FCID said.

The FCID also told the court that they obtained several transaction details from Commercial Bank, Amano Bank, Pan Asia Bank, Bank of Ceylon and two others.

According to the reports obtained from the Registrar of Companies, it was revealed that Shabadeen Aisha had been named as the director of three companies – Mega Construction and Supplier Private Limited, Liver Lanka Engineering Private Company and Green Constructions Private Limited, the FCID said.

The FCID requested the court to issue an order directing the Chief Operating Officer of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) to submit a report as to whether any investments had been made in the CSE by Shabadeen Aisha’s three companies.

The FCID also stated that Shabadeen had obtained two passports with two different addresses.

The Chief Magistrate ordered the CSE’s Chief Operating Officer to forward a detailed report about the financial transactions which had taken place at the CSE under the identity card number and passport numbers of Shabadeen Aisha, to the FCID.
