‘Only UNP can ensure national unity’

Galle District UNP MP Bandula Lal Bandarigoda speaking at a media conference at Temple Trees said the UNP had made tremendous contribution to the development of the Buddha Sasana and can foster national unity in the country again.

To foster national unity, the UNP is ready to field a candidate from the party for the forthcoming Presidential Election, he said.

Fulfilling the 2019 Budget proposals put forward by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, the government has announced salary increments and other allowances for public servants and government pensioners and unparalleled benefits for other sectors, effective from yesterday, the Parliamentarian said.

All public servants, including Tri-Services personnel and government pensioners will benefit by the salary and pension increases. The cost of living allowance of Rs.7,800 currently being paid to public servants and the cost of living allowance of Rs. 3,250 being paid to pensioners will be continued, he said.

Also, 600,000 poor families who had been denied Samurdhi benefits for various reasons for over 21 years will be provided with the benefit, under the 2019 Budget proposals. Those who are not eligible for assistance will also be given it, he said.

The proposal to increase the monthly allowance for the differently abled to Rs. 5,000 will also be implemented from yesterday. A total number of 72,000 differently abled persons, including the 32,000 differently abled persons who are already entitled to receive this allowance, together with a further 40,000 on the waiting list will be paid this monthly allowance.

The government has already been paying a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 each to 21,000 chronically ill kidney patients and another 5,000 patients will receive this allowance effective from yesterday.
