‘UNP won’t reverse positives of 19th Amendment’

The United National Party (UNP) would never agree to reversing the positive features of the 19th Amendment which benefitted the public, UNP Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahman said.

Commenting on the statement made by the President claiming that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has caused of the prevailing political instability in the country, MP Rahman said President Maithripala Sirisena who came to power with a pledge to abolish the Executive Presidency has now completely changed his decision.

After Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed Prime Minister on October 26, 2018, President Sirisena wanted to dissolve the government and always criticised the government. “The 19th Amendment to the Constitution has fulfilled the long-awaited dreams of the people by restoring independent commissions and ensuring people’s rights including the right to information. So we do not want to reverse those benefits,” he added.

Commenting on Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera’s statement that he cannot accept the CID statement to court on the complaints against Dr. Shafi Sahabdeen of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, MP Rahman said that by making such statements, Ven. Rathana Thera is supporting the Tamil diaspora who tried to take Sri Lanka to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
