Fourteen netted over illegal fishing

Naval personnel apprehended 14 persons for engaging in illegal fishing activities in the Back Bay and Upparu areas in Trincomalee, on June 29.

A group of naval personnel attached to a craft in the Eastern Naval Command, during a routine patrol, arrested seven persons who were involved in illegal fishing using unauthorised fishing nets in the Back Bay area where fishing has been banned. The apprehended persons who are between 23 and 32 years have been identified as residents of the Erakkandi area in Trincomalee. The Navy also took one dingy, one outboard motor, an unauthorised net and 396kg of illegally caught fish into naval custody.

Further, seven persons who engaged in illegal fishing with banned nets were taken into custody by naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, at the Upparu area on the same day. The suspects are residents of the Kinniya area, aged between 23 and 48. A dinghy, an OBM and a banned net were also taken into custody.

The suspects along with the seized items were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee, through the Sri Lanka Coast Guard for further investigation.
