St. Anthony’s girls excel in athletics

St. Anthony’s Girls College in Panadura have fared well at the recently held, annual Kalutara zonal inter-school athletic meets, organized by the Kalutara educational and zonal athletic unit, at Vernon U. Fernando sports complex Kalutara for the year 2019.

Hiruni Prarthana Mendis a grade 9 girl, of Panadura St. Anthony’s girls College, was adjudged the most outstanding girl athlete in the 80m and 100m Hurdles (under 14) and secured the first place in both events.

She was lucky enough to be the third placed in Sir John Tarbet Junior Inter-School athletics meet (80m short distance) held at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex, Diyagama in the year 2017, as well.

Hiruni was honoured as the athletic queen at the recently held Panadura Inter-school Athletics (girls) competitions at the Panadura playground.

She has, also achieved success in many sporting events held at the school level annual sports meets, according to the Principal Mrs. Padmini Abeysinghe and her sports teacher Mrs. Domika Milanthi.

A.A.M.D. Ishini Nawodya, Gayathri on Advanced Level student (arts stream), who is also a senior prefect of the college, was placed second at the under 20 girls 100 metres and 400 metres events. She was also second in the girls (U-20) triple jump and long distance, events held at Inter Youth Club (Panadura Divisional level) Athletic meet, in 2017. She displayed her sporting potential and capabilities in securing two first places at Cricket, Volleyball and one first place at Netball, held at Panadura DS level sports competitions in the year 2017.

Under 16 girls putt shot event’s second place was obtained by Kawinthi Thesanthya and Under 14 High Jum event’s third place was captured by Thinoli Mithaya, another two talented girl athletes of the college.

“St. Anthony’s Girls College has been making vast progress in sports and we saw how Anthonians play cricket, at their annual cricket big match, known as “Battle of the Queens” against Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa. said a resident of the area.
