Conditional Cabinet approval granted

Cabinet approval had been granted for the programme to provide tab computers to G.C.E.Advanced Level students on condition that it is first implemented as a pilot project in national schools only, President Maithripala Sirisena had stated according to a press release by the President’s Media Division.

The President had said the proposal to provide tab computers to Advanced Level students in all schools in the country was submitted in 2017. The President had said that his recommendation for this proposal submitted by the Education Ministry was that it was inappropriate to start the project in all schools at once and that it should be first started as a pilot project in several national schools.

The President also proposed that access to internet space other than essential curriculum data should be prevented from these tab computers. Accordingly, Cabinet had been informed that steps would be taken to provide tab computers by blocking access to data outside educational matters. It was also decided implement the next stage depending on the success of the pilot project.

The Cabinet recommendation too was that a project of this nature should be started from national schools. The President had said that five and a half billion rupees had been allocated to provide tab computers to school children countrywide.

The President said his proposal was that after obtaining allocations needed for the pilot project from this find the balance should be utilised to obtain other shortcomings in schools such as desks chairs and other equipment. The President said he also proposed that the exact amount of money needed for this pilot project should also be clearly stated. According the Tender called in 2017 should be altered according to the pilot project. The President said that eventhough there was an urgent need to impart knowledge coupled with new Technology to school children he believed that programs of this nature should be implemented in keeping with children’s discipline and mindset.

The approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted initially to provide free tablets to Advanced Level students only as a pilot project at National Schools. the President’s Media Division said issuing a media release.

The proposal to provide tablets to all A/L students island-wide was presented to the Cabinet in 2017. The recommendation of the President to this proposal by the Ministry of Education was to not to launch this programme island-wide in a single phase, but to introduce as a pilot project at selected National Schools.
