Zahran’s cell leader in Galle held by TID

Easter Sunday bomber leader Zahran’s main organiser in Galle has now been handed over to the Police Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) and is being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). He was detained for 90 days on court order, Galle Division Crime Investigation Division OIC Chief Inspector Udaya Senavirathna told news media yesterday.

 

The Police investigations so far have established that the suspect, identified as Mohamed Cader Mohamed Fasni (29),of Thanipolgaha Junction, Galle, had maintained direct links with Zahran Hashim, the one-time leader of the Islamist group, National Thowheed Jama’ath, and had also taken the pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). It was further disclosed that the suspect was an accountant of a private institution in Biyagama and had conducted English tuition classes.

CI Udaya Senavirathna disclosed that investigations had revealed that Zahran Hashim had participated in a function held at Zahran’s wife house in Malwana and, subsequently, conducted a seminar at a Biyagma reception hall with the participation of Jamil who has been identified as the suicide bomber featured in the Dehiwala blast on Easter Sunday.

At the above seminar Mohamed Cader Mohamed Fasni, together with a group of 25 persons, had been given arms training. All the members of this group are at present in the custody of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID). Fasni was handed over to the TID to facilitate the ongoing investigations on the Easter Sunday Bomb attacks, CI Senavitrathna further said.

The suspect was arrested on April 29 and he was prosecuted under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act of 1989 before the magistrate who issued the Detention Order.
