Nat. Drug Prevention Week ends

The ‘National Drug Prevention Week’ implemented island-wide on the direction of President Maithripala Sirisena from June 23, concluded yesterday (30). The main conference of the week-long programme will be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, under the patronage of the President today (1).

 

The National Drug Prevention Week was implemented parallel to the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on June 26 every year.

The national survey report jointly compiled by the Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention, the Dangerous Drug Control Board and, the Sri Lanka Police on the ‘The Spread of Drug Usage’ will be presented to the President on this occasion.

Under the Sustainable Schools programme, Drug Prevention Committees have been set up in 6,000 schools and ‘Kalyana Mithra’ Societies are being maintained in over 10,000 Dhamma Schools island-wide. For the first time in history, the support of the Tri-Forces has been received in the campaign for the prevention of illicit drugs and, a presidential award ceremony is also held to appreciate the contributions of Forces’ personnel engaged in the drug prevention campaign.

During the period from 2015 to 2019, nearly 25,000 kilogrammes of poisonous drugs have been seized and 1,695 kilogrammes of illegal drugs have been destroyed in public subsequent to legal procedures.
