The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), launched their annual ‘InfoSchol’ program for the year 2020 last week. The program awards scholarships to local and international students to follow industry renowned IT and Business degrees from the University of Westminster, UK.

“The InfoSchol program was initiated several years ago to provide opportunities for talented students,” Chairman, Informatics Group, Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe said. With all financial aspects taken care of, these InfoSchol students could fully focus on both studies as well as their work, sans any distractions.

The ‘Infoschol’ program provides students an opportunity to follow degree programs part-time, within a duration of five years. IIT would assist students to obtain industrial placements in one of several reputed organizations in Sri Lanka that had partnered with IIT, to offer job opportunities.

Thus, this scholarship provides a way for skilled yet those who are unable to gain entrance in to a reputed university to obtain a degree. They also gain a five year working experience which in turn, would benefit them after completing their degree. Students who are registered for this scholarship program, would also receive a substantial allowance from the company they are presently working for during their undergraduate period, while gaining valuable experience that is in line with the degree they are pursuing. Once they graduate with five years of work experience, they would be well-positioned in obtaining employment opportunities at managerial level in any local or multinational company of their choice.

“IIT Graduates are 100% employed on higher salaries due to the quality of education provided by us,” Director, IIT, Professor Jayantha Wijeyaratne said. He also said that the students are not only provided with education, but are also provided a chance to develop their sporting skills as well as their co curricular skills.

Sudharshana Welihinda, Director IIT Operations, said that the most important advantage these students receive is, the opportunity to engage in practical sessions which they learn theoretically during weekends, thus becoming eligible for top positions within a very short period of time.

‘Infoschol,’ is a unique scholarship program introduced in the year 1998, by IIT which was a brain child of Dr Gamini Wickramasinghe. So far this program has produced more than 700 graduates to the country. The basic entry qualifications are a minimum of three passes at the GCE A/L Examination and proficiency in English language, presentation skills and soft skills.

The students are given a three month full time course in house training to get an idea of the Information Technology and Business practices prevailing in the industry.
