Female intern doctor attempts suicide

Over clash with consultant doctor:

A female intern doctor attached to the Marawila Hospital has attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of antibiotics on June 24 night. She is claiming that she could not endure the constant scolding and abuse hurled at her by a consultant doctor at the hospital. This is stated in a complaint made to the Marawila police by the victim doctor’s mother.

Reports said the doctor had swallowed nearly 35 antibiotic pills in her failed suicide bid. The female doctor, who had graduated from a foreign university, had been attached to the Marawila hospital as an intern after gaining Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) registration.

The consultant doctor had also reportedly made several complaints regarding the female doctors’ conduct and even informed the SLMC about it and the SLMC was to give a ruling on the complaint on June 26 (today). Reports said there had been constant clashes between the two doctors as a result of this complaint made to the SLMC.

Marawila police has recorded a statement from the consultant doctor concerned. Investigations are continuing.
