Not a single NTJ mosque, organisation registered - Haleem

Not a single mosque or organisation under the name of the National Thawheed Jamaath (NTJ) has been registered with the Muslim Affairs Department to date, said Postal Services and Muslim Affairs Minister M.H.A. Haleem.

Making a special statement in Parliament yesterday, he refuted all allegations made by former Governor Azath Salley before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks, accusing him of deliberately making baseless and false statements.

“This is a deliberate mudslinging campaign by Salley. I have noticed that he has been levelling baseless allegations against me since 2015 to fulfil his political agendas,” Haleem said.

According to Haleem, mosques or shrines are registered based on the Parliamentary approved Waqf Act.

He described the Waqf Board as an independent institution which is not politically driven, which comprises of four learned and accomplished lawyers and three respected religious leaders.

“It is once the Waqf Board has evaluated the application for the registration of a mosque and given its recommendations that the Muslim Affairs Ministry issues the registration certificate. I very responsibly state that no minister or ministry staff member could influence the Waqf Board in any manner.”

He noted that Azath Salley has been levelling false allegations against his brother Fahim and himself and that this is a vindictive act against him for having rejected his request to be appointed to the Haj Committee.

“He is slandering me and my brother in revenge for having rejected his request and having deemed him unsuitable to be appointed as a member of the Haj Committee. During the previous government, when he was a member of the Haj Committee, it is a known fact that he carried out a massive financial fraud. That is why I rejected his request,” Haleem noted.

He slammed Azath Salley for trying to tarnish his reputation in his electorate of Harispattuwa, which is a predominantly Buddhist Sinhala area and distancing the people from him. Haleem said that he had engaged in honest gentlemanly politics over the past 60 years in the Kandy district together with former Foreign Minister A.C.S. Hameed and had served the people irrespective of their cast, creed or religion. Hence, he challenged those who level such derogatory allegations to prove their claims instead of engaging in such slanderous prattle.
