NINE POLICE OFFICERS TO BE PROBED

The Attorney General has directed the acting IGP to initiate criminal investigations against nine high ranking Police officers for allegedly failing to prevent or minimise Easter Sunday attacks.

Co-ordinating Officer to Attorney General Dappula de Livera, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told Daily News that the Attorney General has decided to issue these directions after taking into consideration the final report dated June 7, 2019 titled ‘Special Board of Inquiry Appointed to Inquire into the series of Incidents Related to the Explosions that occurred at Several Places in the Island on April 21, 2019.

This Special Board of Inquiry has recommended that relevant authorities take suitable criminal and disciplinary action against following officers; Deputy Inspector General of Police (Colombo), Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western North), Deputy Inspector General of Police (SPR), Senior Superintendent of Police (Negombo), Senior Superintendent of Police (Colombo North), Assistant Superintendent of Police (Negombo 3), Senior Superintendent of Police (Negombo 4), OIC of Katana Police Station and OIC of Jampettah police station.

Issuing a letter to the Acting IGP, the Attorney General has requested that this recommendations should be referred to the National Police Commission for suitable disciplinary action against the nine police officers.
