Bribery Commission files indictments against President’s former Chief of Staff, former STC Chairman

The Director General to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption yesterday filed indictments against President’s former Chief of Staff Kusumdasa Mahanama and former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman P. Dissanayaka before the Permanent High Court trial at bar.

This is for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs.540 million and accepting another Rs.20 million from an Indian investor who wants to acquire a section of the Kantale sugar factory.

Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya PC had given his approval to file indictments against the two accused before the Permanent High Court trial at bar.

The Bribery Commission Director General filed indictments against two accused under 24 counts for allegedly committing offences punishable under Section 19 (b), (c ), 25(2) and 25(3) of the Bribery Act.

The two accused were arrested at a car park of a luxury hotel in the capital Colombo, on May 3, 2018 by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption while accepting a bribe of 20 million.

The Bribery Commission had named 46 individuals as witnesses and further listed 41 items as production items in the case.
